A nontraditional and playful take on a Japanese Izakaya, inspired by Chef Bill Taibe’s travels and love for food.
Kawa Ni is a Izakaya-inspired Japanese pub. The word Izakaya in Japanese is made up of three kanji (居酒屋) with the meaning, “stay-drink-place.” A spot to grab a drink, settle in, and get comfortable.
While we offer raw fish, our menu focuses on dumplings, noodle bowls, rice bowls, and much more. We pair these with an extensive selection of whiskey, sake, and carefully crafted cocktails. Our goal is to create a warm, inviting space for both our guests and our team. Stop in, say hello, and see what makes Kawa Ni special.
WHERE WE STARTED
Kawa Ni began as an idea...a lively, Japanese-inspired pub where great food, thoughtful ingredients and a sense of community come together. In 2014 after years of shaping Fairfield County’s dining scene, Chef Bill Taibe opened Kawa Ni in Westport bringing his signature approach to bold flavors and hospitality to a new concept. With an ever-evolving menu and an emphasis on seasonality, Kawa Ni quickly became a favorite for those looking for something unexpected.
WHERE WE ARE NOW
A decade later, Kawa Ni remains rooted in that same spirit of innovation and warmth. In 2023 we expanded West with the opening of Kawa Ni Denver, introducing our take on Japanese pub food to a new city. The Denver location has already earned praise from both National and Local publications, including a recognition from Michelin in 2024. Whether in Westport or Denver, Kawa Ni continues to be a place for creative food, good drinks and a welcoming atmosphere — no reservations required.
ABOUT CHEF BILL TAIBE
Bill Taibe discovered his love for food early on, beginning his culinary journey at a local butcher shop after school. His dedication quickly propelled him from Sous Chef to Executive Chef and he went on to shape and lead several successful restaurants in Fairfield County.
In 2009 Bill launched LeFarm in Westport, marking the start of his acclaimed culinary ventures. This was followed by The Whelk — a celebrated seafood and oyster bar — and Kawa Ni — his Japanese-inspired pub that has since expanded to Denver. In 2020 he debuted Don Memo, a restaurant inspired by his admiration for Mexican culture and cuisine located in the historic Westport Town Hall. Two years later he opened The Art Space Café in partnership with The Norwalk Art Space...a philanthropic organization supporting young artists and musicians.
Beyond the kitchen Bill is committed to fostering a better restaurant industry. His “Kitchen Share” program reallocates service charges to support both front and back-of-house employees, setting a precedent for wage equity while inspiring similar initiatives throughout the tri-state area.
Bill resides in Weston, Connecticut with his wife Rachel, their sons Caeden and Oliver and their dogs Boone and Goose.
